City is hungry for new leadership.
Seattle Times | May 9, 2013
...“Miscommunications between departments happen, but it is the responsibility of our leaders to be transparent about them. The fact that our current mayor promoted information he knew was deliberately misleading is exactly why this city is hungry for new leadership.”

Harrell’s applause line: takeaways from Monday mayoral debate
Seattle Times | April 30, 2013
...But Harrell led with the response the audience craved when he declared: “The answer is simple: institutional practices!” And Harrell said he’d immediately reached out to the Seattle Women’s Commission to develop a plan to respond to the problem...Harrell also had other moments where his answers were crisper and less bland than those offered by rivals. He attacked “political cowardice” by some elected officials following the 2010 fatal shooting of woodcarver John T. Williams by a Seattle police officer. And he made the case he’d be able to represent a more diverse swath of the city, saying: “I am welcome in corporate boardrooms and churches and athletic fields and the roughest and toughest neighborhoods.”

Harrell Stands Out at First Mayoral Debate
Seattle Met | April 30, 2013
... but there was no denying that City Council member Harrell, with his passion about social justice (he answered Douglas' "what was the moment you decided to run?" question with perhaps the evening's more disarming, on-point, and serious moment saying "I was astounded by the political cowardice that I saw from our elected leaders ... when the woodcarver, John T. Williams, was tragically killed..."), stood out from the pack last night.

The eloquence of Harrell, who made impassioned statements about social justice...
Crosscut | April 30, 2013
The surprise of the night for some was the eloquence of Harrell, who made impassioned statements about social justice, accused civic leaders of "cowardice" in their initial response to the killing of Indian woodcarver John T. Williams, and knocked it out of of the park on the subject of the disparity between men and women's pay. The wage gap is worse in "progressive" Seattle than most other cities, according to a recent study. Burgess and Staadecker pronounced themselves shocked and said rather lamely that they would address the problem through education, but Harrell said the problem was institutional practices, that they had to be tackled head on, and that he'd already asked the Seattle Women's Commission for recommendations.

A strong inspirational leader, an authentic leader...

"I witnessed something that was miraculous. I witnessed a city that can heal and try to move forward," said Harrell. "That healing process that I believe Seattle can have with a strong inspirational leader, an authentic leader, is what I believe is the opportunity we have in front of us. So it was based on those events that I said, 'Now is the time for Bruce Harrell to run for mayor.'"

People want to believe again...
Seattle Times | April 29, 2013
There is a reason seven people are challenging this mayor,” said City Councilmember Bruce Harrell. “People want to believe again...Harrell drew applause for saying institutional practices must change and legal action be considered. He said a difference between McGinn and him is that when he heard the news, he went to the Seattle Women’s Commission and said, “Let’s develop a work plan.”

Harrell led in fundraising in February and March - shows backing from across the city
Seattle Times | April 28, 2013
Harrell, a former corporate attorney and two-term council member, enjoys some of the benefits of incumbency... criticize McGinn’s leadership of the Police Department, most recently its delay in releasing a report critical of the department’s handling of last year’s May Day protests. He has also questioned why the city pays the salary of Police Guild President Rich O’Neill when it doesn’t cover any other union executive. Harrell led in fundraising in February and March. He has relatively few $700 donors, the maximum contribution allowed, but he’s made up for it with a wide range of smaller donations and people attending small house parties. His campaign says that shows backing from across the city.

Councilmember Bruce Harrell Demands Response and Action
Seattle Times | April 19, 2013
Councilmember Bruce Harrell, chair of the Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee, sought an official report soon after the chaos in the streets. He heard nothing and subsequently sent five emails looking for a response. Nothing. In January 2013 he sent a request to Mayor Mike McGinn questioning the lack of response. Silence. And Harrell had never heard a reference to a report written by the SPD’s assigned incident commander during the protests.
